The study abroad programs at Towson University have created new opportunities for students who want to work or intern in foreign countries.
Kaushal Desai, Peer Adviser for the Study Abroad Office, explained the growing trend of students working while abroad.
“We’re seeing more and more students go abroad for volunteer work or for internships,” Desai said. “And so it’s taking a focus to not just sending students to take classes but also to just, you know, work with a non-profit or take an internship somewhere.”
According to Desai, 8% of Towson students are studying abroad, placing Towson at more than double the national average of 2-3% of college students participating in study abroad programs. He stressed the influence that the study abroad program can have on the resumes of job applicants at home.
“Just being able to say that ‘I have this experience where if I need to adapt, if I need to change, if I need to go off and work by myself, I have done that before and I can deal with that.’ That really looks attractive to employers,” Desai said.
Studying abroad often forces students to make decisions for themselves and explore new points-of-view.
For students interested in the study abroad program, information sessions are held from 2-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, in Room 407 of the Psychology Building. Students can also visit the Towson University Study Abroad Office located in Room 408 of the Psychology Building.
