Gloves adorn the rusted fence around Druid Lake as part of artist Bruce Willen’s art installation, the “Library of Lost Gloves & Lost Loves.” This photo won second place in Division O for Feature Photo at the 2022 MDDC Awards. I took all of the photos for my colleague’s article about the lost glove display, which can be viewed here.Portrait of Laurabelle Hope, who was (*at the time) the last living founding member of the Cecil County chapter of the NAACP. Read the story here.Courtney England, a student in the natural resources program at the Cecil County School of Technology, transplants various plants into a pot inside the school’s greenhouse. Students who are accepted into the technical school spend alternating days at their home school for regular academic classes, and CCST for their program of choice. Read the story here.Sue Shumaker holds a sign during a July 2019 protest against the treatment of asylum seekers, particularly children, at the United States-Mexico border. The local demonstration, held in Meadow Park in Elkton and organized by the Cecil County Democrat Club, was one of about 800 “Lights for Liberty” vigils that were planned across the U.S. and in other countries that night. King would have been 90 years old. Bishop Frank M. Reid III reflected on the last sermon King gave April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis, Tennessee, before he was assassinated the following day. In that sermon, King told his audience to “develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness.” In turn, Reid urged those gathered in Wright’s AME Church to choose “dangerous unselfishness” over “destructive selfishness.” Read the story here.While at the NorthBay Adventure Camp in North East, Md., a student analyzes a tree covered in fungi that he and his classmates nicknamed the “Frosted Flake Fungus” and the “Turkey Tail-feather Fungus.” All Cecil County Public School students begin their 6th grade school year by visiting the camp for a week of environmental education and life lessons. The trip is meant to teach students skills to assess and solve problems they face in nature and in their daily lives.
